United States Attorney Brendan V. Johnson announced that a Mission, South Dakota, woman charged with Assault by Striking, Beating, and Wounding was sentenced on January 6, 2012, by United States Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno. Kyla Sharp Butte, age 18, was sentenced to 6 months in custody and a $10 special assessment to the Victim Assistance Fund.
Sharp Butte was indicted by a federal grand jury on August 22, 2011, and pled guilty to the charge on November 9, 2011. Sometime between May 1, 2011, and May 31, 2011, Sharp Butte punched, kicked, kneed, and assaulted the victim at a house in Mission, South Dakota. After grabbing the victim by the hair and dragging her outside, Sharp Butte kicked her in the face.
This case was investigated by Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Assistant United States Attorney Tim Maher prosecuted the case.
Sharp Butte was immediately turned over to the custody of the United States Marshal.
